TREX TRANSCEND® DECKING FASTENER OPTIONS

TREX HIDEAWAY® HIDDEN FASTENING SYSTEM

In pursuit of the perfect deck, the Trex® Transcend decking range comes with a hidden installation option. When using the grooved edge decking boards, the Trex Hideaway fastening system installs between the deck boards, fastening them to the joists with no visible deck screw heads on the walking surface. This precision also creates perfectly consistent spacing between the boards of 5mm gaps for a flawless look across the entire deck.

The Trex Hideaway hidden fastening system includes a few simple components:

TREX KLEVAKLIP SNAP-LOC CLIP FASTENING SYSTEM

Trex have now released a hidden fastening system in conjunction with KlevaKlip - The Trex KlevaKlip Snap-Loc Clip System.

KlevaKlip Snap-Loc system is a multi-board fixed pitch decking system. This system provides a consistent gapping between the boards. The Snap-Loc clip allows the boards to be snapped into the clip by the weight of someone "walking the board into the clip". The teeth of the clip flex allowing the board to insert into the clip, and then "snap" into the grooves of the Trex decking board, locking into place.

This system is highly recommended for use on square or rectangular shape decks.

Features & Benefits

  • Aesthetic appeal - your deck looks great without distraction of top-fixed screws and nails
  • Super fast fixing system - up to three times faster than conventional concealed fixing systems
  • Extremely easy to use - almost impossible to get wrong

The Cost of Trex Decking Vs Solid Timber Decking

At first glance Trex decking may seem the more expensive option when compared to solid timber decking. However, when comparing costs you need to allow for some of the extra costs not always considered  like double the amount of screws that are used when face fixing decking. The width of your boards  and how many extra meters need  to be laid per square meter, as an example 90mm wide boards = 11.1m per/m2 with a 140x25mm Trex Decking board only 6.9m per m2 . The extra cost of Timber preservatives and decking oil too keep your timber decking looking good.  Also the waste factor due to solid timber being supplied as random lengths and Trex is supplied at set lengths. Waste can be calculated even before you start your deck. The largest factor is the ongoing maintenance costs of recoating your timber deck every 3 to 6 months.

When you include all these costs there is not much difference between Trex and solid timber decking, only that your Trex decking will look the same as the day you laid it backed by Trex’s 25 year Fade & Stain warranty.

Something Else Worth Considering...

All timber decking sold in Australia including imported species are sold as kiln dried which means it has a low moisture content and wants to absorb moisture and expand. Unfortunately most decking oils are European brands sold into the Australian market. They are manufactured for European seasoned timber which has a higher moisture content and wants to expel moisture and shrink. The big difference is with kiln dried timber you want a product to seal the timber to maintain the moisture content as well as a UV protection for Australian’s harsh environment with our really hot summer days and cooler nights. If your timber has not been sealed you are more prone to have cupping, cracking, shrinkage and expansion issues. So in short, you need a product that seals your timber on all faces and edges and also has a UV protection that will stand up to Australia’s hash environment. Simply put most European brands don’t seal the timber, they just coat the boards with a product designed for seasoned timber in a European climate who’s UV index is at the other end of the spectrum from Australia. So it makes sense that you will spend more time re-coating your decking, to protect it from the Australian sun and less time sitting around enjoying it.

All timber decking requires ongoing maintenance no matter what timber species you choose. UV rays and moisture will break down your solid timber decking overtime. To prolong the life of a solid timber deck a maintenance regime needs to be adhered to. This maintenance regime  of washing down with a oxalic acid (deck wash) and re-coating may vary between 3-6 months depending on which brand of decking oil you use, so this adds a significant cost to your deck over its life.

Conceal Fixing

Trex is designed to be concealed fixed. The Trex grooved edge boards are designed to accommodate the Trex Hideaway Hidden Fastening System. This system allows for a smooth seamless look with no screws or holes on the top face of your boards with only 16 to 20 fasteners used per/m2.

Trex also gives you the option to top fix, with colour matched screws available through Master Woodturning.

Concealed fixing is not recommended for any kiln dried timber decking due to the lower moisture content that wants to absorb moisture and expand it in width, which may cause the concealed fixing to snap the edge of the board when it expands.
